Week of Prayer for Missions

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 100:1

Little Christmas Angels Proclaim Good News

Groggily, I glanced over at the clock - 4 a.m. What was that noise outside? I dragged myself out of bed to find more than 100 Indian children waiting for me, their faces illuminated by small candles and exploding sparklers. It was Christmas Day, and their faces were radiant.

An older boy from this South Asian children's home motioned everyone to follow behind his rusty bike. The boys spent most of the previous day rigging a battery-powered speaker system to it. We walked out the gate and headed for a village.

Interrupting the crisp morning air, a loud, scratchy, speaker voice screamed, "Happy, happy Christmas!" Children shouted joyfully, "Merry, merry Christmas!" This happy procession continued shouting and singing through one village after another. Villagers stepped out of their homes to see the commotion.

I asked if anyone got mad at the children for waking them up at 4 a.m. "But sister," came the reply, "if we didn't do this, no one would know that it's Jesus' birthday." He pointed to the older boys walking along the edge of the group. "They are telling the Christmas story to everyone we meet."

In this 99.9% Hindu area of South Asia, these children proclaimed Jesus' light in a vast darkness riddled with false gods.

When the microphone finally made it into my hands, I screamed in my best Telagu accent, "Happy, happy Christmas!" The children responded with shouts followed by exploding fireworks in the sky. It's the day of our Savior's birth, and everyone should know!

Week of Prayer for Missions

Today's story from Voices of the Faithful is written by Debbie, who works in central, eastern, and southern Africa.

Power over the enemy

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
Luke 10:17-20

Roger works with university students in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He came to know Christ a few years ago, but his family still practices traditional Africa religions, consults with doctors and worships their ancestors. When his sister came to live in Kinshasa, Roger prayed that she would become a Christian.

Soon after arriving in the capital city, Roger’s sister became very ill with tuberculosis. Roger grabbed some students from his Bible study and rushed to the hospital to pray. His sister was barely conscious as the group prayed for her.

Suddenly, the sick woman started screaming at the top of her lungs. The voice that came out was not her own, but the voice of a demonic spirit. The voice screamed in agony anytime the group prayed.

Roger addressed the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ, come out.” The sister fell into a deep sleep as the group prayed over her.

When the sister woke up, Roger shared about the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for her, and she asked Jesus into her life. Even though she died three days later, Roger rejoiced that she would be in heaven.

The Bible came to life right before the student’s eyes. “I understand the Bible even more than before. This experience was just like when Jesus cast out spirits, “ Roger said. “That day, Acts came alive for me and my students. When you see God work like this, you can’t keep quiet.”

Week of Prayer for Missions

Voice in the Night

And they said, 'Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.' Acts 10:22

The woman awoke startled. She frantically glanced around the dark room. No one was there, yet she knew she had heard a voice speak clearly. Confused, the Muslim woman fell back on the foam mattress. She closed her eyes and heard the voice again. Okay, she thought to herself. I'll do what You say.

The next morning, she sent a child to the exact location in her dream. There, the child met me walking down a dirt path. The child said there was someone wanting to see me. I thought it was a case of mistaken identity - especially since I had never walked down this path before. However, the child was so insistent that I finally followed.

Once we neared the home, a Muslim woman ran out to greet us. Before anyone could shake hands in introduction, she blurted out, "Tell me about God!" I smiled and asked, "How did you know that I was a Christian when we don't even know each other?"

The Muslim woman recounted the dream that she had the previous night. "This voice told me to send a child to meet a woman walking down the dirt path at the exact time you were walking there," she said. "It then told me to ask this woman about God, and then I would know the truth."

Knowing that many Muslim converts come to Christ through dreams, I began to share. I thanked God for the "voice in the night" that encouraged her to hear and accept the truth of Jesus.

Week of Prayer for Missions

Continuing with our week of prayer for missions, today's story comes from a worker in China.

Four Questions

That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death. Philippians 3:10

This was the second group of leaders we had trained in two weeks. The training had been going well even though many of the believers were young: some young in years and some in their faith. A couple of them were only 15 and 16 years old. Some had only been Christians for a few months.

The teaching for the morning was on baptism, and a 15 year old girl wanted to be baptized. She had been a believer from a young age but had never been immersed.

Four questions are asked during a baptism: (1) Do you believe in Jesus?  (2) Has He forgiven your sins?  (3) Do you promise to walk with Him always?  But there is one more question.

I watched and listened to the father, who would be performing the baptism. Calmly, and with much joy, he asked the first, second and third questions. Then I heard a surprising question. The father asked the fourth question, "When they come in to our house and take us away, when they beat us and try to get us to deny Him, will you still follow Jesus?"

There before my eyes, a father was asking his daughter to be willing to be persecuted for her faith in Christ and to be willing to see him persecuted for his faith. With a sense of awe, I prayed that I might be more like them. I think they understood more clearly what the Father felt when He sent His Son to die for us.

Week of Prayer for Missions

If you are a follower of Jesus, you are part of the task to fulfill the Great Commission.

Paul says, “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27). Jesus has commissioned us to be His heart, His hands, His voice. Through praying, giving, and going, Southern Baptists have fulfilled this legacy for more than 160 years.

Yet billions remain lost and time may be running out for them. We must pray more intentionally and give more sacrificially than ever before. Our churches must take direct responsibility for helping reach the nearly 3,800 unengaged, unreached people groups that missionaries may never be able to get to.

And, since most unreached people groups likely are represented in the world's urban centers, we have unique challenges and opportunities to reach the world through the cities, as illustrated in this year’s week of prayer features.

What can you do, individually? Start by being “Southern Baptist missions” through your prayers to be an extension of His heart, hands, and voice through unprecedented giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering®.
- excerpt taken from the International Mission Board website.

Yesterday began the Week of Prayer for Missions. Each day this week I would like to share a story of a missionary from the book Voices of the Faithful. Today's story is written by Angie who is serving in South Asia.

Beginning with One
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

One thing you can count on in Asia is that the electricity will go out. A prudent homemaker has a candle (and matches) in every room for such occasions. One night when the power went out, my husband and a friend stepped out onto the balcony into the pitch darkness. No house lights, no streetlights, no lights from cars or motocycles, just darkness. They faced a hill some distance away, which was peppered with houses. As they watched, one candle was lit, and they saw its small light shine. Two more were lit, then five more, then 20 more. At an increasing rate, the hill became illuminated with small lights.

Sometimes our family feels overwhelmed at the task before us, especially when we focus on the many lost people in our target group. There just isn’t enough time in each day to impact every life by ourselves. But we have chosen to pour our lives into a few believers who have a strong influence in the community. These few, in turn, are each discipling several new believers, who will disciple several more and so on, spreading the Light. Even Jesus chose only 12, knowing that those 12 would impact their own people as well as other nations surrounding them. He knew our human limitations.

Using His example of discipleship, many more will be added to the kingdom at an increasing rate. That’s what I hope for – the rapid spread of the gospel, starting with just one: me.

Angie, South Asia

Be Still

Jon Acuff is a preacher’s kid/author/speaker who works for Dave Ramsey. He wrote the book Stuff Christians Like and writes for the blog as well.

His post today really touched me. I think we all need to be still, empty ourselves, and let God fill us with His spirit.

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 05:01 AM PDT

This summer I got empty.

I wasn’t tired.

I wasn’t drained.

I didn’t melt down or burn out.

I got empty.

And it was awesome.

Since Stuff Christians Like started in March of 2008, things have been busy. I wrote a million words on four different blogs. I published three books. I contributed to half a dozen other books. I gave 100 different speeches across the country.

In order to do that, I had to turn my head into an idea factory. I had to train myself to see content all day. I had to learn to ask, “Is that a post right there? Is that conversation something for a book? Is that experience something for a speech?” Over and over again, I hustled and sprinted and crafted word after word, idea after idea.

And I loved it. Figuring out how to keep a blog fresh and creative is a fun challenge. Starting a new blog is fun. Writing books is fun. And with each word I wrote, I learned how to figure out new challenges. How do you write a Christian satire book and then jump shelves to the business career section? How do you write a 2 minute speech that has to be funny, insightful and complete? How do you be funny on command without being fake?

I’d throw my head at each new challenge that came along and most of them I could figure out. Some I failed, some went well, but every one had one thing in common: I would eventually figure it out.

But this summer, I decided to take a break when I went on vacation. In the past, I’d lie to myself. I’d say, “I’m an idea guy! Coming up with new ideas is how I like to relax!” Then I’d sit on a chair on the beach and scribble down new blog ideas. Or I’d read a book about self-improvement or branding or hustle. Then I’d come home from vacation and express shock that I did not return refreshed.

This year, instead of doing that, I just got empty. I stopped writing down ideas. I stopped trying to “get ahead” by deleting emails in my inbox on vacation. I didn’t do anything but play with the kids on the beach and hang out with my wife. I got empty. And into that emptiness I felt like God had some space to whisper again.

Maybe I’m the only one who has a loud life, but I have my doubts. Chances are you’re digesting more content than you ever have before right now. You’ve got books and blogs and Twitter and Facebook and a thousand other sources of information in your head. You’ve got family commitments and work commitments and meetings and reminders and tasks and activities and soccer for your kids and church commitments and … it’s exhausting.

We spend an extra month at work more than people in past generations did. Let me repeat that.

You and I found a way to work an additional month every year. I put that stat from a Harvard economist in my book Quitter because it’s terrifying.

We are busy and loud and, if we could just figure our lives out, things would be better.

That was what I thought as I sat on the beach this summer, but something was bothering me. Something wouldn’t leave me alone, day after day.

I couldn’t figure out the ocean.

Every day, the beach was different. The tide came up to a different place each day. High tide and low tide were never identical from one day to the next. The waves were never the same each day. The tidal pools shifted and moved each day. I tried as hard as I could to predict where to put our chairs, based on figuring out the day before, but each new day was different.

I couldn’t figure out the ocean.

Standing there on the shore one afternoon, it hit me. I didn’t see handwriting in the sand or God’s words in the clouds, but it felt like he reminded me of something simple. I felt like he poked into my heart and said,

“You think the ocean is difficult to figure out? You think the ocean is complex? I put my breath in man. Quit trying to figure yourself out. Quit trying to figure out how life works. Just be with me.”

In other words, “Be still and know that I am God.”

I like action. I like motion. I like productivity and effectiveness. Stillness is not sexy to me. It is not something that comes easy to me. Emptiness is something I fight, not invite.

And yet, there it was and there it is. An invitation to be still and quiet and present to the big things that a big God is unfolding in his way at his time at his pace.

I love to write. I love to speak. I love the meager bit of talent God’s given me to share with folks. But I’m learning that when I refuse to be quiet or empty, I miss so many important things. And that, ultimately, “be still” wasn’t a casual suggestion. It was a command. And it’s one I want to obey.

Question:
Is it ever hard for you to be still?

Wondering if you should wait on God?

Waiting on God is one of the hardest things to figure out. I’ve written about it a bunch before because it’s a question we all ask at some point.

Does God want me to look for a new job, or be still and wait where he has me?

Does God want me to date more if I’m interested in being married, or does he want me to wait on him?

Does God want us to buy a new house or wait on him?

Does God want me to quit my job and join the mission field or wait on him?

The variety of wait-or-go situations is endless. And confusing.

But I have discovered one tiny verse that’s challenged how I view the waiting dilemma.

The verse is Mark 15:43, and it’s really simple. It’s such a fragment of a fragment of a much bigger story that it’s easy to overlook it. But it does speak to waiting in an interesting way.
Here is what it says:

Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.

On the one hand, Joseph is noted as someone who was “waiting for the kingdom of God.” He is identified as a man of faith, as someone waiting. But then, within the confines of the same exact sentence, he is described as someone that “went boldly.”

He didn’t do one or the other; he did both. Waiting and action were not mutually exclusive in his life. But most of the time, I act like they are. I usually think it’s a one or the other type of world we’re living in. I either wait on God, or I run with God. But Joseph did both.

He waited and he sprinted.

He was calm and bold.

Peaceful and busy. (Insert your own two words that feel weird together.)

Maybe the answer to the question we all keep asking isn’t what we thought it would be.

Maybe the answer to the question, “Should I wait on God or hustle as hard as I can?” is actually “Yes.”

My Story

If you were not able to make it to church this past Sunday, Bro. Bill continued his series on Making it Count. This past Sunday we were encouraged and challenged to tell our story and testimony. You may say, "My story isn't very exciting. I didn't have any kind of striking revelation or go through any major obstacles like drug addicts or alcoholics or blindness like Paul." But I say your story is exciting! You did have a striking revelation, and we all go through major obstacles to overcome our old sinful nature. Your story is just as important as the next person's story.

Today I would like to share with you my story.

Growing up in a Christian home, I always knew of Jesus and God. I don't remember there ever being a time when I thought, "Who is God?" or "Who is Jesus Christ?" I have always known about them.

That doesn't mean I knew them.

I knew God created all things. I knew Jesus was God's Son who was sent to die on a cross for your and my sins. I knew that to go to heaven you had to ask Jesus to be your Savior and come into your heart.

But all that didn't really click until one year at Vacation Bible School. I was 9 years old. The teacher asked my class, "What happens if you don't ask Jesus to save you and come into your heart?" The little boy beside me raised his hand and answered, "You go to hell."

And it clicked.

Those four words caused my eyes to widen and my jaw to drop just a little as I realized that if I died right now, I would not be going to heaven. So that night I called my mom into my room and told her I wanted to be saved. She led me through a prayer, and that night I was saved. Jesus came into my heart, forgave me of all my sins and became my Savior.

Has it been easy ever since? Of course not. As with any other relationship, it is hard work. It takes effort. Jesus never promised an easy life if we follow Him.

"...If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you...." John 15:20

But I have chosen to follow Jesus. Why? Because He loves me. Because He died for me. I need Him. My sins are too heavy for me to carry. He took my sins - and yours - and died in our place. He became sin and conquered death so that we could have everlasting life!

I hope you choose to follow Jesus as well.
If you like, feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.

I enjoy hearing from you.

Study to Show Thyself Approved

Photobucket

2 Timothy 2:15 has been on my mind the past few days. It's really just the first word of the verse that has been constantly in my mind. Study. Why is it so hard for me to study the Bible? I need to. I want to. But I don't. I would love to get up early in the morning and read before going to work. And sometimes I do. I'll get into the habit of getting up to read, and doing that makes my day so much better! Then I slip up and fall out of the habit... again. Back and forth. Back and forth.

I have a fairly laid-back job. So I actually have time during the day to read. Do I? No. I surf the web aimlessly. Pinterest can be a very dangerous website. I could stay on there for hours, just looking. Do you have as much trouble as I do studying the Bible? Do you have a certain plan you go by, or are you going through a Bible study book right now? Would you mind sharing what works for you?

Scripture and Prayer Downloads

I have added the scriptures that Mrs. Suzanne sent in an email to the downloads page. I have also come across prayer calendars that we could all use. One is for praying for your children, and the other is for praying for your husband. They both come from Inspired to Action. This site has many resources we women could use! You should definitely check it out! Do you have no husband or children? Well, there is no time like the present to start praying for that future husband or child! Never forget how powerful prayer can be!

One more thing. If you have your own blog and would like to place our button on your blog, just copy the text in the box below and paste it into an HTML gadget on your own blog!

Also, get ready for the Women's Mystery Night! Mark your calendars for October 15, 2011. You don't want to miss this night!

Now then, let's pick back up with the monthly memory verse, shall we? What I chose for this month is quite a bit lengthy; so how about we just choose one part of the armor of God that we need to work on and focus on that.

"This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore,

with truth like a belt around your waist,
righteousness like armor on your chest,
and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace.
In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Take the helmet of salvation,
and the sword of the Spirit, which is God's word.

Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert in this with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints." Ephesians 6:13-18

Praying for you,
Jamie

Everything Changes

It's 1:30am and I am fumbling around on this website trying to "learn" how to update our blog. I hope I can do this justice. Of late I have been constantly reminded that everything changes. Small example..me trying to write to each of you. As mentioned before, I have always been in awe of Lindsey Crawford. There is a very long list of reasons..but one that is in the forefront at this moment is her ability to communicate..either verbally or in written form. Me..not so much.

Then I think about my life. Changes every where I look. Most of them are exciting and fun to be part of-like our youngest son in high school. All the opportunities that are coming his way. Learning to drive, school dances, tons of new friends and, being part of "First Priority" a Christian organization that meets weekly at the school. They have had 34 students accept Christ as their Lord and Savior this year. How amazing is that? Looking back at my High School, no one was meeting at lunch to talk about Jesus.

Our house has a revolving door on it for college students. We never know who will be inside when we come home. The students we have met and had the chance to share a piece of their life. To listen to their hopes and dreams. To hear them tell us how God is revealing Himself in their lives. Never before in our ministry have we been so blessed with students this age.

My own two college students who are hungry for God's Word. Each week the book or topic changes. This fact alone brings be humbly before God's throne. He has been so gracious with us.
I have had to ask myself recently, " Do I desire God's Word with that kind of zeal?" Everything changes.

People have often compared life to seasons. Different seasons in our lives will bring different things. As I look at this season of my life, it is one where the changes are not the ones with the WOW factors. They are the ones where God is whispering in my deepest part.."Trust Me." It is the time when I have to begin to let go of my oldest son,Michael, as he graduates from college and sit back and truly become a spectator as God helps him continue to stand tall as a man of God and follow Him. My head has a handle on this..my heart is freaking out.

It is a season when I see my mother starting to change. Age catching up to her when I didn't think it couldn't happen. This is my mom...my friend...my hero. Everything changes.

It is at these times when God sings to my heart, "I never change." It is at these times when the good and the bad come so close together that God reminds me that I need him every hour, Every hour I need him.

Chris Tomlin has a new version of I need thee..called "I Need You". I believe that everything changes so we never forget that we need our Lord and Saviour. That we need that comfort and peace. We need that hope. My life issues are nothing compared to others. I have been blessed beyond measure. It is just time for me to be reminded I need him more than I need anything or anyone else in my life. He has amazing advertures in store for me, as he does each of you...as long as we are willing to change.

I am so excited about this years Women's Ministry. We are having the One Night, One Heart worship service on May 15th. Please join me in prayer as we expect God to change us. Come and come ready to hear from our God!!!

I Need You by Chris Tomlin

Lord I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You, I fall apart
You're the one that guides my heart

Lord, I need You, oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are Lord I am free, Holiness is Christ in me
Yes where You are Lord I am free, Holiness is Christ in me

So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand, I'll fall on You

Jesus You're my hope and stay
And when I cannot stand, I'll fall on You
Jesus You're my hope and stay

I love you all,
Suzanne
